Sterile processing technicians are responsible for maintaining the sterility and functionality of medical equipment in healthcare settings. This role is crucial for infection control, as improperly sterilized instruments can lead to severe patient complications.

Duties and Responsibilities
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Instrument Preparation and Sterilization
- Clean, decontaminate, assemble, and disinfect instrument trays and scopes following manufacturer guidelines and established protocols.
- Conduct quality checks and ensure functionality of instrumentation before reprocessing.
- Communication and Collaboration
- Maintain clear communication with departments regarding requests and deliveries of sterile supplies.
- Partner with OR teams to ensure efficient and timely distribution of case carts, equipment, and supplies.
- Compliance and Readiness
- Adhere to unit programs to support patient care, including maintaining a quiet, professional environment and delivering top-notch customer service.
- Perform routine quality control measures, equipment checks, and ensure departmental cleanliness.
- Documentation and Tracking
- Utilize the computerized instrument tracking system to manage sterilization loads, instrument counts, and special handling instructions.
- Maintain accurate logs for equipment sent out for repair.
- Department Maintenance
- Keep central processing areas organized and clean, ensuring all equipment is ready for use.
- Rotate stock in sterile storage to maintain adequate supply levels and reduce waste.
- Support and Other Responsibilities
- Actively promote best practices and maintain a commitment to quality patient care.
- Participate in additional tasks as assigned to support department goals.
Qualifications
Required Education
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
(Note: Employees hired before February 18, 2019, are exempt from this requirement.)
Experience
- Previous experience in a healthcare environment is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, sterile techniques, and cleaning methods is strongly preferred.
Certification Requirements
- Certification in Sterile Processing and/or Technology (CSPDT or CRCST) is required within two years of hire.
(Employees hired before February 18, 2019, are exempt from this certification requirement.)
Skills and Abilities
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
- Proficiency with computer systems and the ability to learn and use a computerized instrument tracking system.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional training or certifications in sterile processing or surgical technology.
