Job Description

Bainbridge High School is building its pool of substitutes for the 2024 school year. When a teacher is absent, you step in, follow the lesson plan left on the desk, and guide students through the day in whichever subject or grade needs cover. Assignments come out as needed, so you can pick the days that work for you, and the school’s support staff is on hand to help with classroom logistics and student questions. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and either a valid Washington Teaching Certificate or be eligible for an Emergency Substitute Certificate (the district will assist with the latter). Strong classroom-management skills, the ability to adapt quickly, and a genuine interest in working with diverse student populations are essential; prior teaching experience is welcome but not required. Substitutes receive competitive daily pay, on-site support from administrators, and the chance to gain experience that can lead to permanent openings within one of the state’s top-ranked districts.

Summary of the Job Role

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring continuity in the classroom by following lesson plans and maintaining order when the regular teacher is absent. Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage the classroom effectively and ensure that students remain on task and engaged in their learning.
• Follow lesson plans provided by the regular teacher, making adjustments as needed to meet the needs of the students.
• Maintain a positive and orderly classroom environment.
• Provide support and guidance to students in completing their assignments.
• Ensure that all school rules and policies are followed.
• Communicate with other staff members regarding any issues or concerns that arise during the day.
• Adapt to teaching various subjects and grade levels as required by the school.

Qualifications

Educational Background:

• Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in any field.
• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate or eligibility for an Emergency Substitute Certificate.

Experience:

• Previous experience in education or classroom management is preferred but not required.

Industry Knowledge:

• Familiarity with educational practices, school policies, and Washington State standards is beneficial.

Responsibilities

Daily Tasks:

• Deliver prepared lesson plans while maintaining the structure and flow of the classroom.
• Provide instruction in various subjects, depending on the needs of the school.

• Assist students with assignments and questions, ensuring they stay on track.

Supervision:

• Oversee student activities and ensure compliance with school policies.
• Manage classroom discipline and handle any behavior issues that arise.

Compliance:

• Adhere to all school rules and state education regulations.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of students during the school day.

Collaboration:

• Work with other teachers and administrative staff to ensure a smooth transition in and out of the classroom.
• Communicate any issues or feedback to regular staff after completing your substitute duties.

Performance Indicators:

• Success in maintaining classroom discipline and engagement.
• Ability to adapt to different subjects and student needs with minimal disruption.
• Effectiveness in following lesson plans and ensuring educational continuity.

Education & Experience

Minimum Education:

• A Bachelor’s degree in any field is required.

Experience:

• Previous experience in education or classroom management is preferred, but not mandatory.

Preferred Education:

• A degree in education or a related field would be advantageous but is not required.

• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.
• Adaptability and flexibility to manage various grade levels and subjects.
• Attention to detail and organizational skills to manage classroom activities smoothly.

Additional Certifications:

• A valid Washington State Teaching Certificate is required. However, if you do not have one, the school district can recommend you for an Emergency Substitute Certificate.
